An Adventure In Soap Making!

One of the most aggravating problems in soap making is a fragrance that causes rapid acceleration of the soap batter. I just hit another one with Angel. It was a request by one of my customers and I gladly make those. Acceleration is when, adding the fragrance oil, you go from loose batter to almost instant soap.

Had the design and colors worked out in my head. Prepped the colors and added the lye solution to the oils. I had planned on a white background with hot pink and purple swirling through out. And then the Soap Fairies hit! They do exist. Just make a well planned soap. They will introduce themselves.

As I mixed the fragrance into the color prepped pitchers I knew I was doomed! Acceleration! Now theres acceleration and then there acceleration. I had the latter. Verging on seizure, also known as soap in a pot!

I dumped, literally, the white into the mold, rapidly followed by the pink and purple which floated on the hard white. Not a damn swirl to be seen. So I did the only sensible thing, and grabbed my big spoon and beat it into submission. A new technique in soap making. Now I have made soap for almost 20 years and none of that experience counts. No predicting acceleration. You just keep your big spoon handy.

So I made an executive decision. (I’m the CEO when I’m not cleaning up.) no more Hot Angel soap. That lasted until my customers wanted to know when the new batch will be ready. That’s the Soap Fairies you hear giggling in the background. So, today I grabbed my big spoon and did battle. We now have another batch of Hot Angel soap for Uptown Girl Soap. No swirls. Try some and hear your skin sing the Glory Alleluia song. No, it isn’t the Soap Fairies. Your skin can recognize the difference between quality soap and all the rest.
Happy Bubbles!

How Far Would You Go?

As the population ages, anti- aging skin care increases, especially within the nations holding the highest number of baby boomers. That includes the USA. Individuals born between 1946 and 1964 are the biggest consumers of anti-aging services and products. More than 8,000 individuals are added per day to the count of people above 65 and this trend is expected to continue.

The USA is the biggest market when it comes to skin care. Facial anti-aging skin products generated sales of approximately 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2014. Total skin care sales were 2.8 billion US dollars in 2014. Now those are some serious numbers for skin care. So it’s safe to say, people take skin care, especially anti-wrinkle products, to a very high level. So just how far would they go?

When it comes to skin and looking good, women are willing to go to any length in search of that fountain if youth. Here are some astonishing skin treatments and numbers.

🔴 45% opted for sheep placenta face masks. The stem cells are purported to increase collagen and tighten the skin. I don’t know about you, but for me, there is a big yuck factor.

🔴 41% were willing to try Bee Venom. This one is said to smooth out wrinkles and fool the skin to produce more collagen. Very costly when you consider you can get a bee to bite you for free.

🔴 39% went for Vampire Face Masks. Blood is taken from your body and injected into your face. This has a really high yuck factor. This process creates platelet rich plasma. It is said to remove fine lines and, since the results are instant, it can be done before a special occasion. I know of no occasion special enough to give this a go.

🔴 38% opted for leeches. Yes, the little blood suckers. Demi Moore has admitted to undergoing this treatment. It involves placing leeches on your face and letting them detoxify your blood giving you a fresher and younger looking face. For me, this one really rings the yuck bell since bugs of any type terrify me.

🔴 30% were positive a sperm facial could turn back the clock. Researchers have said  a component called spermine, present in semen, is rich in anti-oxidants, and when applied on the face, can prevent the skin from ageing and give it a smoother texture. I’m not saying a single word on this one. I did think though that the researchers might be male and willing donors.

🔴 25% went the bird poo route. This bit of insanity came from Japan and is called the Geisha Facial. Many celebs go this route. Better than leeches I suppose. Marginally!

🔴 21% for Cryotherapy. Demi Moore opted for this one also. You expose yourself to temperatures below 140 degrees for a short period of time. It is said to eliminate toxins and help regenerate tissues, plus stimulating collagen production. Sounds like the road to serious frost bite to me.

🔴 19% Cactus Massage. Thorns removed, this one is supposed to detoxify the skin, hydrate and heal it too, especially if they missed a thorn. Worldwide spa clinics utilize this facial at a very high price.

🔴 15% are into Urine Therapy. Drink it or wear it to give one a glowing and wrinkle free skin. It is said to have anti- aging properties, but if it was in your body already, and you have wrinkles, my guess is that it isn’t going to work. What more can you say?

🔴 14% are for Gold Facials. Chinese women ran a gold roller over their face for cell renewal and collagen production. This lead to the gold mask facial utilizing 24 karat gold and a gold flake serum to hydrate and smooth the skin instantly. I like my gold in a bracelet, around my wrist where I can see it. Just rub it on your face before closing the clasp. I am a firm believer in multi- tasking.

So, there you have the current insanity on the never ending journey to the fountain of youth. At an exorbitant fee! Take your pick! Or, buy my $5 bar of premium, handmade soap, use sun screen and avoid large doses of sun for excellent youth retention. That’s a no brainer in my book.

Happy Thanksgiving

What are you thankful for this year? Some years are harder then others to find that answer. Even if you have to look harder, there is always some little thing. Find it!
I was blessed with three amazing sons and a very special daughter in law. That’s one of my many blessings . . . she agreed to marry my son. He got very lucky that day. As did my entire family.
Take a minute from the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, and remember what your blessings are. They may be buried under the problems every family encounters, but know that they are there. You just have to look.
Wishing a safe and Happy Thanksgiving, from my family to yours.

A Christmas Tale

Here Comes Christmas

There is simply no stopping it! I know, I tried. I don’t think there is any other holiday that causes as much stress, has a super high price tag, and leaves us totally exhausted. It’s time, once again, to begin our never ending search for that perfect present.

Like many others, I swear every year to get a jump on it and finish early. In my dream world I will have purchased every gift, have them wrapped to perfection, the house will be spotless and decorated to rival Martha Stewart, and I sip wine by the fireplace, awaiting the arrival of guests for my gourmet cooked Christmas dinner. Then reality sets in!

It’s Christmas Eve morning and time to begin the insane shopping and cooking. By 6pm I’m drinking the wine straight out of the bottle! The fireplace part of the dream deserted me just as the fire engine pulls away from my house. Seems you have to open the flue before lighting the damn thing. Memo to self, don’t play with matches.

All the “good will toward man” bonhomie leaves us as sweaters go on sale for 50% off at the local mall and there is only a half dozen left. This could get ugly if one more person steps on my foot. Next year I will get an early start.

And If one more person tells me, in the month of July “Oh yes, I just finished my Christmas shopping and everything is wrapped.”, I will have no holiday worries as Big Bertha and I commiserate behind bars, awaiting trial.

So, unless you want to join me and my new best friend, Big Bertha, give some thought to getting a start on this years holiday madness.

Ho, Ho, Ho!

Is It Or Isn’t It!

A bit of multitasking this morning. My Labrador Retriever uses a treadmill in the morning for exercise (or he eats the house), so, while he walks I write. By the look on his face I think he would rather switch roles. Not a chance!

There is currently a lot of controversy about Shea Butter. The value of Shea isn’t in question. It is an amazing commodity for our skin. What is in question . . . is it actually Shea Butter? Lots of fraud going on in the Shea Butter industry.

A quick recap on Shea. Shea butter is a natural oil made from compressing and boiling the fruit of the African karite tree, also called “The Tree of Life.” While it can be ingested, it is most commonly used in skin products because of its amazing moisturizing and healing properties. Natural shea butter contains high quantities of vitamins A and E and is known to improve a variety of skin conditions. Enough said on it’s value as that isn’t the cause for concern.

There are many people selling what they call Shea Butter, that isn’t Shea at all, but the nut butter known as African River Butter or African Butter. How can you tell the difference? I did my research. According to the American Shea Butter Institute, there is no yellow Shea Butter. The real deal is ivory in color, in varying shades. No mustard yellow!

Now, to prove you were sold the fake Shea you would need to send a sample off for testing. That’s a problem. The American Shea Butter Institute charges $600 to do the test. I won’t be standing in line. Actually the line is probably devoid of the smaller business people.

There are similarities between the two butters, but the biggest difference is the healing fraction. It is much higher in the Shea Butter as compared to the River Butter. Here is the link to the comparison chart published by the American Shea Butter Institute.

I can see how it happens – the fraud. The African karite tree grows in a specific area. They grow naturally in the grasslands of west and central Africa. They do not need irrigation, fertilizer or pesticides. The tree has adapted to the savannah environment and won’t grow in dense plantations. Plantations fail because the trees do not germinate easily and take 25 years to produce fruit, so they remain a wild product.

For the poor to benefit at all from the tree they would need to live in an area where the tree grows. No family buggy to hop into to travel to their locale. Some women have to walk 10 miles a day to benefit from the harvest of the nut. The women who do the harvesting can carry up to 100 pounds of Shea nuts on their head for the return trip. Desperation causes people to deal with difficult situations.

My guess would be that those who do not have access to the Shea producing trees sell what they have and in many cases that would be River butter Or African River Butter. There is a fine line between ethics and watching your children starve. While these knock off butters do have value, genuine Shea butter wins the contest.

From The American Shea Butter Institute:
What is the Cost for Grade Analysis? “
The cost for Grade Analysis is $600 per sample. The same amount should accompany the sample when submitted to the American Shea Butter Institute for Grade Analysis. Samples received without this fee will not be tested until appropriate arrangements have been made.”

I doubt there are any African women who can afford this testing.

So, look for the ivory color in your Shea butter. The mustard yellow Shea is probably African River Butter. I have a hard time being angry with women trying to feed their kids.

A Day To Remember

Red Poppies
We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

Moina Michael – 1915

The true birthplace of Memorial Day remains unknown, but its of little importance. It’s a day for us to pay our respects to those brave souls who have died in service to the USA. Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead.

The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). And so it remains to this day.

The “National Moment Of Remembrance” resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence.” So little to ask for those who gave so much. On Memorial Day honor the true heroes with that moment of silence.
